Root canal and endodontic treatment
When a tooth becomes infected, due to a cavity or a big filing, the dentist will propose a root canal to devitalize it by removing infected nervous tissue.
If left untreated, the inflamed or infected nerve could cause pain or even an abscessed tooth.
A root canal allows keeping the tooth, rather than extracting it.
Warnings and Recommendations
Teeth that have undergone a root canal are not protected from cavities. Also, since they are no longer living, they are more fragile and subject to breaks. Therefore, dentists may recommend the installation of a crown to protect this type of tooth.
